“If Candle Mass be fair and bright, winter will have another flight. But if it be dark with clouds and rain, winter is gone and will not come again” - Old poem

Groundhog Day, known to the Church as Candle Mass and to ancients as Imbolc, is a Cross-Quarter Day and marks the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox. 40 days (or six weeks) after the solstice and 40 days (or six weeks) before the equinox, there does seem to be a noticeable change in the light quality as we eagerly wait for spring and watch for portents of the same.

It seems rather counter-intuitive that a bright sunny day where the groundhog sees its shadow, means six more weeks of winter but a hibernating animal such as a bear, hedgehog or groundhog is believed to symbolize the winter. If the winter is dead and gone, it will cast no shadow, but if alive and able to cast a shadow, it will probably hang around until the middle of March.

Join us as we wait to say goodbye to winter and welcome spring

May your days be merry as you sing, and may all your dreams come true in spring.

Everywhere you look (Tune: Short'nin Bread) Everywhere you look You see a groundhog, groundhog Everybody celebrates On Groundhog Day Up in the morning What does he see A shadow means there's Six more weeks of Winter's freeze But if in the morning No shadow is seen Springtime round the corner Is what that means Everywhere you look You see a groundhog, groundhog Everybody celebrates On Groundhog Day
2.
Good Groundhogs Now Rejoice (Tune: Good Christian Men) Good Groundhogs now rejoice But don't make any noise Listen now to what we say Winter soon will go away Warmth of spring will soon be found We see no shadow on the ground Spring will soon be here Spring will soon be here
3.
Hark How He Tells (Tune: Carol of the Bells) Hark how he tells, see how he smells, Sniffing the air, out from his lair, Poking about, raising his snout, Forecasting spring, making us sing, In Punxsutawney greeting the dawn he Stands in the light of observers sight Will the groundhog see his shadow Bringing in spring
4.
Heating Bills (Tune: Jingle Bells) A month or two ago The snow began to fall, The temperature went down And I went up the wall The furnace started in To fight the winter chill And everything was fine until I got my heating bill Heating Bills, Heating Bills Soon will go away Oh how we look forward to The word on Groundhog Day Heating Bills, Heating Bills Soon will all be gone Oh how much we miss the sight Of flowers on the lawn
5.
The Hibernating Groundhog (Tune: The Holly and the Ivy) The hibernating groundhog makes a furry little ball From his burrow deep beneath the snow His tidings cheer us all The warming of the sun in the flowing of the year The season's cycle in its course means that spring will soon be here.
6.
In Punsutawney in P-A (Tune: Up on the Housetop) In Punxsutawney, in P-A We gather to celebrate Groundhog Day In the winter of the year We stand and wait and watch and cheer Ho Ho Ho, his shadow Hee Hee Hee, will he see Out from his burrow Groundhog peers To see when springtime will be here
7.
Lo, how a nose presuming (Lo How a Rose) Lo, how a nose presuming To peer out from the ground A forecast we're assuming To tell when spring comes around In winter’s ice and chill We seek an end to winter We all have had our fill

I'm Numb So Numb I've Come to Hear Phil Tell (Tune: Come Oh Come Emmanuel) I'm numb so numb I've come to hear Phil tell When I can bid the winter's cold farewell I'm tired of winter's ice and snow I'd like to know when winter's snow will go Look around, no shadow can be found, Which means that spring will soon warm frozen ground
9.
Oh Chilly Sight (Tune: Oh Holy Night) Oh chilly sight In frosty Punxsutawney It is the morn when old Phil Does his thing Out of the ground He wakes and greets the dawning And tells us all when we can expect the spring A look around, if then he sees his shadow We've six more weeks until we see the spring Get out your skis, Don't put away your snowshoes, There's ice and snow to go, oh no, Look out below, we have a way to go Until we see the spring
10.
The Second of February (Tune: The first Noel) On February Second we went to see The Groundhog resplendent in Punxsutawney And of the air, groundhog gave a sniff And he saw no shadow, we said that's Terrif...ic because it means that spring Will soon arrive, We’re so tired of boots, gloves and winter jive So tell, so tell...of the springtime foretell Now is the time of the winter's farewell.
11.
Punxsutawney Phil Looked Out (Tune: Good King Wenceslas) Punxsutawney Phil Looked Out From his winter dwelling Saw no shadow on the ground Springtime was foretelling Winter soon will go away Warmth of spring returning Longer now gets every day As the planet's turning. Winter winds are icy cold A chilly type sensation So that we resort to find Some warmth in hibernation Snug within our burrows we Escape the winter's blast Till in good time we shall see Spring return at last

Six More Weeks (Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella) Six more weeks we're tired of winter Six more weeks we're ready for spring On Groundhog Day if old Phil sees his shadow Six more weeks of winter's misery Ugh, ugh tired of winter's ice and cold Ugh, ugh winter can sure get old

Check the Calls (Tune: Deck the Halls) Check the calls to Punxsutawney Following the winter comes the spring Wanting now to mow the lawn we Watch prognostication's famous king If the groundhog sees his shadow Winter will be hanging on for six weeks more Ready for the warmth of springtime Ready to shove winter out the door
15.
Groundhog Peers From Burrow of Brown (Tune: We Three Kings) Groundhog peers from burrow of brown Lifts his head and looks around Sees his shadow, somewhat sad-o Six more weeks underground Oh Time of winter, time of cold Long long nights, it gets real old Sleeting, sneezing, sniffling, freezing Winter joys which we behold

Groundhog Sleeping Underground (Tune: Angels We Have Heard On High) Groundhog sleeping under ground Soon will wake and look around If his shadow groundhog sees Six more weeks of winter's freeze Grou-----------nd hog Day Will he see his shadow? Grou-----------nd hog Day Will he see his shadow? If no shadow is observed Sanity may be preserved If no shadow does appear It means that spring will soon be here. Grou-----------nd hog Day Will he see his shadow? Grou-----------nd hog Day Will he see his shadow?

'Tis a gift of earth's warming (Tune: Simple Gifts) 'Tis a gift of earth's warming 'Tis a gift of God's spring As the seasons cycle And all the children sing The sun's rays will warm us And the winter will pass As we wait for the spring time And hope it comes fast Hail Phil on Groundhog Day Winter soon will go away We wait for the word of the arrival of spring As we watch the emergence of prognostication's king
